Why purchase this Specimen 69 2017 South African Silver Krugerrand?
One of the most important coins in modern numismatics is the Gold Krugerrand. Originally struck in 1967, this 1 Troy oz. gold coin marked the first time that gold bullion was readily available to the average man. The idea quickly rose in popularity, and before long, other world Mints began striking their own gold bullion coins. We know these coins today as American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs.
Despite both the American Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf series also including silver versions, The Krugerrand remained its traditional, 91.67% fine gold. For 50 long years, it has served as one of the most traded coins in the world, and it has remained solely a gold coin. That all changes in 2017.
Gold transformed into silver!
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand, the South African Mint has released another historic first – the first-ever Silver Krugerrand! Taking the iconic design of the Gold Krugerrand and recreating it in 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver, this 2017 Silver Krugerrand will be a coin like you have never seen before.
Paul Kruger, former President of what is now the Transvaal Province of South Africa, is depicted in a portrait in the obverse. The Afrikaans and English inscriptions “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA” surround this design, showing only two of the 11 official languages of South Africa. On the reverse, a majestic springbok antelope is wreathed by engravings of “KRUGERRAND,” “2017,” and “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1.” The South African Mint has also added a special feature to this already impressive design – a 50th Anniversary Privy mark to commemorate the anniversary of the original Gold Krugerrand.
Graded Specimen 69 with the exclusive South Africa label
The South African Mint has been dedicated to the quality of their latest release, and that is certainly evident in their grading results. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) assigned these coins the second highest grade available - Specimen 69! This grade means the coins have only one or two of the smallest, almost unnoticeable flaws on their surfaces. Additionally, ModernCoinMart (MCM) exclusive South African labels were used instead of standard blue labels in order to make this historic release perfect!
NGC also assigned this coin the designation First Releases, for its submission for grading within 30 days of its issue. Due to the South African Mint's pursuit of the finest quality, the release of these coins was delayed, meaning that only a very limited quantity of 2017 Silver Krugerrands were able to achieve the First Releases designation!
MCM is the EXCLUSIVE North American distributor of the world’s first-ever Silver Krugerrands. Make sure to secure this important numismatic release with the limited First Releases designation while it is still available!
