Why order this Specimen 69 First Day of Issue 2017 South Africa 1 oz. Silver Krugerrand with a black core slab and an exclusive Krugerrand label?
Practically everyone who has watched the coin and bullion market for a while is familiar with the Gold Krugerrand. The reason these coins are so well-known is because they have been in production since 1967 and they are the first modern gold bullion coins.
However, 2017 is a huge year for the series, the 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the South African Mint, in partnership with ModernCoinMart, has produced the world’s first-ever Silver Krugerrands! The 2017 Silver Krugerrand offered here weighs 1 Troy oz. and is made of .999 fine silver. This release has been anticipated all around the world due to the sheer significance of the series. As you may expect, mintage of these coins is limited. No more than 1,000,000 of them will be struck.
Classic Krugerrand design with enhancements
Like its gold counterpart, the obverse of the Silver Krugerrand displays a detailed portrait of Paul Kruger. These coins are named after Kruger, former president of what is now South Africa.
If you observe this design carefully, you may notice it looks sharper and more detailed than the original. Perhaps this is most noticeable in Kruger’s hair and beard. Both the obverse and reverse designs are more detailed due to the South African Mint’s use of the latest technology. This side displays the standard English and Afrikaans inscriptions, “SOUTH AFRICA” and “SUID-AFRIKA.”
The enhanced level of detail is even more visible on the reverse. The springbok shows more fine details in its fur than ever before. Additionally, the landscape in the background is highly detailed.
The majority of the inscriptions here are the same as the Gold Krugerrand aside from this coin being silver instead. The inscriptions here read “KRUGERRAND,” “2017,” “FYNSILWER,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “R1.”
In addition to the new higher level of detail, this design also features a privy mark for the anniversary of the series. The words form a circle and read “1967-2017 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY.” The “50” is at the center while the other words encircle it.
NGC Specimen 69 First Day of Issue with black core and Krugerrand label
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was tasked with grading this 2017 1 oz. Silver Krugerrand. It was sent on its official release date as part of a sealed box from the South African Mint, which is why it received the coveted First Day of Issue designation.
The grade of Specimen 69 was awarded to this coin. The NGC experts use a 70 point grading scale, and a 69 grade indicates this coin is almost perfect.
To enhance the overall presentation of this Silver Krugerrand, it has a special slab and an exclusive label. Its holder has a black core, which goes perfectly with this silver coin. The exclusive Krugerrand label displays not only the grade, but also the South African Mint’s logo, a springbok, and the words “FIRST SILVER KRUGERRAND.”
