Why purchase this 2017 1/10 oz. Gold Krugerrand?

The South African Krugerrand celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2017. Introduced in 1967, it was the first gold bullion coin of the modern age to be issued by a federal government. Unlike other government issued coins, the value of the Krugerrand is based solely upon the gold metal content of the coin; it has no face value denomination. Fractional Krugerrands have been minted by South Africa since 1980. This stunning 2017 release is struck from 1/10 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold (22 karats), and measures 16.5 mm in diameter with a 1.35 mm thickness.

Iconic Krugerrand Design

The left facing image of Boer statesman Paul Kruger, four-term president of the old South African Republic, appears on the obverse. The design, by Otto Schultz, is accompanied by the legend "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA."

A springbok, one of the national symbols of South Africa, is depicted gracefully running across a plain on the reverse. The image created by African sculptor Coert Steynberg in 1948 was originally featured on the reverse of the South African five shilling coin. Inscriptions include "1/10 KRUGERRAND," "2017" and "FYNGOUD 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD."
