Why order this Smithsonian (2017) James Longacre Proposed 1865 Motto Double Eagle Design 1/10 oz. Gold Medal?
This 1/10 oz. Gold (2017) Smithsonian James Longacre Proposed 1865 Motto Double Eagle Design Medal features the designs that James Longacre created for the double eagle. A piece bearing those designs was never minted... until now. This medal was struck from .999 fine gold and is perfect for collectors who have an appreciation for numismatic history.
Exquisite Liberty Design by James Longacre
The obverse of this medal bears a left-side portrait of Liberty that was designed by James Longacre. She wears a headpiece that bears an inscription of her name. The date of the original intended release, "1865," is on the bottom, and stars represent the original states along the rest of the rim.
On the reverse is Longacre's take on a traditional design of an eagle guarding a union shield. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. Above its head is a banner that bears Longacre's suggestion for an inscription on American coinage, "OUR TRUST IS IN GOD."
Impeccable Proof 70 Ultra Cameo
This medal earned the highest grade given out by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Proof 70, which indicates that it is in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. NGC also labeled the piece an Ultra Cameo, which indicates that it bears sharp contrasts between frosted devices and mirrored fields.
