Why purchase this GEM Proof (2017) Smithsonian - Morgans First Silver Dollars 1 oz. Silver Proof?
This 1 oz. Silver (2017) Smithsonian - Morgans First Silver Dollars Commemorative Proof is an exclusive offering of ModernCoinMart. Issued with the authorization of the Smithsonian, the commemorative proof rescues George T. Morgan's designs for the Trade Dollar, which have never before been seen by the public. This pattern was discovered inside of his personal sketchbook, and was created before his iconic "Morgan Dollars" design was thought up! Struck from .999 fine silver at the Mayer Mint, this piece has exceptional quality that was well worth the wait.
Democratic Liberty design by George T. Morgan
Liberty wears a "mob cap" on the obverse of this commemorative proof. Worn by working women during the time of the French Revolution, the cap symbolizes that freedom is for everyone, not just elites. Fifteen stars along the rim encircle the image. For the reverse, Morgan adapted William Barber's Eagle design, which appeared both on the Trade Dollar and the 20c coin.
Uncirculated GEM Proof with Smithsonian label
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this commemorative proof is in GEM Proof condition, which is equivalent to at least Proof 65, though typically higher. NGC provided this information on a Smithsonian label, which includes its logo.
