Why order this GEM Proof (2017) Smithsonian - Morgans First Silver Dollars 1 oz. Silver Commemorative Proof?
ModernCoinMart is the exclusive distributor of this Smithsonian (2017) Morgans First Silver Dollars 1 oz. Silver Commemorative Proof. The commemorative proof brings to life the designs of one of the most popular designers in American numismatic history, George T. Morgan. He created these designs for the Trade Dollar, but they were never used. Instead, they sat on page 31 of his sketchbook and were hidden away in storage at the Smithsonian... until now. With the authorization of the Smithsonian, MCM had this commemorative proof struck from .999 pure silver at the Mayer Mint in Germany. The Mint's outstanding job in terms of quality makes this piece well worth the wait.
Stunning Liberty design by George T. Morgan
Both the obverse and reverse of this commemorative proof were the work of George T. Morgan. On the obverse, Liberty is shown in left-side profile wearing a mob cap, a symbol that freedom is for the poor as well as the rich. The reverse bears an eagle image that Morgan adapted from William Barber's image for the Trade Dollar and 20c piece.
GEM Proof Ultra Cameo with a black core holder Smithsonian Institution label
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) labeled this commemorative proof GEM Proof, which is the equivalent to Mint State 65 or better. They provided this certification on a label that bears the name of the Smithsonian Institution as well as its logo and set the piece in a black core.
