Powerful George Rogers Clark Design by Frank Morris
The obverse of this coin, like other coins in the America the Beautiful Series, bears John Flanagan's 1932 portrait of President George Washington. The left-side profile is joined by several inscriptions, including the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the face value, "QUARTER DOLLAR."
Frank Morris designed and Michael Gaudioso sculpted the reverse design, which features George Rogers Clark leading his men to Fort Sackville. Clark was a Lieutenant Colonel in the continental army and was tasked with limiting British influence on the frontier. Clark and two of his men are shown in the waist-deep water of the floodplains bearing muskets. Among the four rim inscriptions are "GEORGE ROGERS CLARK" and "INDIANA," the state represented by this issue.
