Exquisite National Park Designs
Obverse: The coins in this set share a common obverse design among themselves and with the other coins in the series. That design is John Flanagan's 1932 portrait of President George Washington. The inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" appear to the left and right of the portrait, respectively, while the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "QUARTER DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim. John Flanagan was well known for his plaquettes and statuary, but his most recognized works were for the quarter.
Reverse: Each reverse depicts an image from or associated with the featured national park. The images are of Camel Rock (Shawnee National Forest), a frontiersman (Cumberland Gap National Historical Park), John Brown's Fort (Harpers Ferry National Historic Park), Theodore Roosevelt on horseback (Theodore Roosevelt National Park), and William Jasper returning the regimental flag to Fort Moultrie's ramparts (Fort Moultrie). Rim inscriptions note the name of the featured park and the name of the state in which it is located, as well as the date, "2016," and statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
