Why add the Proof 70 First Day of Issue 2016-S Proof Sacagawea Dollar to your collection?
This 2016-S Proof Sacagawea Dollar bears the grade Proof 70 Ultra Cameo on the coveted First Day of Issue label. The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) was the third party grading service chosen to encapsulate this excellent specimen.
Following the debacle of the Susan B. Anthony dollar, the wheels were set in motion for the US Mint to replace that unpopular series with a more easily distinguished coin. It was determined that the new $1 coin should be issued as the same size and weigh as the Anthony dollar, but that the color of the coin should be gold.
The obverse of the coin features an image of Sacagawea, the Shoshone guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. She is pictured with her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, depicted as an infant in a papoose. The obverse was designed by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. The reverse design for 2106 is by the US Mint's Thomas D. Rogers who, incidentally designed the original reverse flying eagle used from 2000-2008. The new reverse honors the Native American Code Talkers of both World Wars. The image features two feathers crossed at the bottom, forming an "V" and two helmets. The engraving was done by Renata Gordon.
