Distinctly American designs by Justin Kunz and Paul Balan
The obverse image was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. Kunz sought to represent courage, hope, and liberty with the image, which features a toga-clad Liberty holding her torch of freedom in her right hand and balancing the stars and stripes with her other. She faces slightly to the holder's left, though her shoulders are turned slightly to the holder's right. The year of issue, "2016," the word "LIBERTY," the designer's initials, "JK," and the sculptor's initials, "PH," are all inscribed on the obverse as well.
Paul Balan designed and Don Everhart sculpted the reverse. The design, which lacks a background, features an eagle in flight. Executed in fine detail, Balan's design brings the bird to life. Its wings are spread by its side, and it bears a branch in its claws. Both the designer's and sculptor's initials are included near the design.
