Why add the 5 oz. Silver Shawnee America the Beautiful Specimen Coin to your collection?
Shawnee National Forest is an area encompassing approximately 280,000 acres in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois. The region is noted for the Little Grand Canyon, formed by the melting of the Laurentide ice sheet, and its incredible gravity-defying rock formations. 31st release in the U.S. Mint's America the Beautiful series, this 2016 Silver Shawnee Quarter measures three inches (76.2mm) in diameter, weighs 155.5g, and is struck from 5 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
Magnificent Camel Rock design
The reverse, the artistry of Justin Kunz and Jim Licaretz, depicts the awe-inspiring Camel Rock, with a red-tailed hawk in the mirrored sky above, and untamed foliage below. The border is inscribed "SHAWNEE," "ILLINOIS," "2016," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
As on all quarters struck since 1932, the portrait of George Washington adorns the obverse, as sculpted by New York artist John Flanagan, along with the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "QUARTER DOLLAR." The coin's smooth edge is inscribed ".999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE."
Gorgeous Specimen 69
This 2016-P 5 oz. Silver America the Beautiful Shawnee coin is graded a near perfect Specimen 69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This Specimen coin bears a Philadelphia "P" Mint mark and is struck largely for collectors with a matte-like finish, high-quality strike, and a lower mintage than the bullion issue.
