The Gold Eagle is minted in four weights, each featuring identical imagery celebrating the themes of liberty, peace and freedom.
Beautifully Detailed Gold Eagle DesignObverse: Liberty is personified as a young woman on the obverse, walking forward while holding aloft an olive branch and a flaming torch. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "2016" and the artist's initials "ASG." The powerful image is borrowed from the 1907 Gold Double Eagle, which was designed by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, in collaboration with President Theodore Roosevelt. Reverse: A nesting family of eagles is depicted on the reverse, with an eagle in flight above grasping an olive branch. All Gold Eagle coins issued from 1986 until mid-2021 feature this eagle family portrait, which is the identifying Type-1 style element. The image is the work of American sculptor Miley Busiek, whose artistry can also be seen in the collections of various museums, libraries and universities across the country.
