In 2016, France issued silver medals for the 130th anniversary of the completion of the Statue of Liberty. These were struck at the Monnaie de Paris, or Paris Mint. Mintage of each size was very limited. The silver medal shown here is the 5 oz. version. The designs featured on this medal are nearly identical to the designs found on an 1896 medal that was issued for the 10th anniversary. The original medal from 1896 is quite scarce today.

Dedicated to the Statue of Liberty

In the foreground of the obverse, 3 figures are shown sitting together. Two of them are looking into the distance at the Statue of Liberty. The Franco-American Union is mentioned in the inscriptions here.

The reverse features a depiction of the designer behind the Statue of Liberty, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. His portrait is on an olive branch while French and American shields are positioned to each side.

When this large medal was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, it was assigned the grade of Mint State 69. This grade is reserved for coins and medals that are nearly perfect. An over-sized slab now protects this medal.
