Why order this 30th Anniversary 2016 1/2 oz Gold $25 American Eagle?

2016 was an important year for the Gold Eagle as the series marked its 30th anniversary. The coin continues to be popular among collectors thanks both to its backing for weight and purity by the U.S government and its stunning obverse design. This piece is a part of that fine tradition. It was struck at the West Point Mint on a half oz planchet of .9167 fine gold. It was part of a mintage of just 74,000 pieces.

Traditional Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the obverse design for the double eagle, on which it appeared from 1907-1933. The design, which is named for him, features Liberty standing powerfully at the center facing the holder as a strong wind blows her long hair and her garment. In her right hand, she holds high her torch, a symbol of freedom recognized throughout the world. In her left hand, she extends an olive branch, a symbol of peace, to her side. She appears a larger than life figure thanks to the rays of the sun, which emanate from behind her. She is joined by the Capitol Dome, as well as fifty stars, which represent the current states along the rim.

Miley Busiek created the reverse design, which depicts a family of eagles. A male returns to his nest with an olive branch. In the nest, his mate tends to their young while watching his return. Inscriptions on this face include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one), the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the coin's weight, "1/2 OZ FINE GOLD," among others.
