This 2015-W Proof Silver Eagle, which received a grade of PF69 Ultra Cameo from the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC), offers collectors the opportunity to get a coin that accentuates each of the fine details in the design of the world’s most popular bullion coin. It also offers a more affordable option than its PF70 counterpart. The coin consists of .999 fine silver and has a diameter of 40.6 mm, which makes it easy for just about anyone to view the design easily.
Design of the 2015-W Proof Silver Eagle
Adolph Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design, which he first created in 1916 for the half dollar, appears on the obverse of this 2015-W Proof Silver Eagle. The image of Lady Liberty dominates the coin, from just above the bottom of the coin, where only the year of mintage, “2015,” separates her foot from the edge, to her head at the top, which partially obscures the “E” in the word “LIBERTY.” To the left of her, the holder can see part of the American flag in which she is draped waving behind her outstretched right arm. Her left arm is by her side, holding laurel and oak branches, which symbolize civilian and military glory. On her head is a Phrygian cap. In the lower left, a mountain partially obscures the setting sun, the rays of which extend roughly halfway up the coin. On the opposite side are the words of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The design on the reverse was adapted from the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti specifically for the Silver Eagle in 1986. At the center is a shield that is guarded by a heraldic eagle. The shield has thirteen stripes. Above the bird’s head is an arrangement of thirteen stars, which, like the stripes, refer to the thirteen original states. a ribbon extends from the eagle’s beak bearing the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). Arrows and an olive branch are grasped in its talons. The mint mark, a “W,” appears in the lower left, indicating that the coin was struck at West Point. Inscriptions along the rim provide the name of the country that issued the coin, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and essential information about the coin’s metal content and face value: “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR.”
