2015 American Liberty High Relief Gold coin
This beautiful representation of the United States of American in pure 24 karat (.9999) fine gold is the first of its kind and has been the subject of articles for months. This highly anticipated coin issue has a $100 denomination, which is a first for modern one-ounce gold coins.
The obverse design was created by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Justin Kunz and shows a young lady crowned with olive leaves holding a torch in her right hand and a flag pole bearing the US flag in her left hand. The designer's initials are near the bottom of the design next to Liberty's dress. Mint engraver Phebe Hemphill completed the sculpt of the design, and her initials show inside the bottom stripe of the flag.
The reverse side of this coin shows a majestic American Bald Eagle in mid-flight, carrying a twig of olive in its talon as an embodiment of freedom. The design was created by US Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Paul C. Balan. His initials are directly under the Eagle's leg and above the leading edge of the olive twig. Mint Engraver Don Everhart completed the sculpt of this design and his initials can be found along the right edge of the design.
High Relief Gold coin history
While this American Liberty High Relief gold coin is the first of its kind, this is not the first such coin struck in the United States. In 2009 the United States Mint produced a limited number of Ultra High Relief coins that reincarnated the Augustus Saint-Gaudens 1907 double eagle 20 coin with exacting detail. These coins were immediately very popular and value soared shortly after their release. To this day, these coins are difficult to find and are quite valuable.
The 2015 High Relief gold coin does not reincarnate an old design, it rather employs modern art technique to create a design with classic allegoric American symbols in a modern setting. The coin's design is truly stunning and is sure to be a hit with collectors!
