The March of Dimes was founded in 1938 to combat Polio and to work to improve the health of mothers and babies. Its founders, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Jonas Salk, are depicted together on the obverse of this coin along with the date, 2015.
The reverse of this coin depicts a baby sleeping peacefully in the hands of a parent, noting the mission of the non-profit organization, to look out for the health and safety of pregnant mothers and infants. This mission is a slight change from the original mission of the organization since the Polio vaccine saw widespread use and near complete eradication of the disease.
The March of Dimes is headquartered in White Plains, New York, and now has a multifaceted mission which includes newborn screening, prenatal care, and the fight against measles, rubella and other dangerous diseases that affect babies and small children.
This silver dollar coin is made of 90% fine coin silver and has the same weight and size as historic silver dollars from the United States, containing 26.73g of silver with a 38.1 millimeter diameter.
