Silver Proof Set History
Proof coins and proof sets go back to the beginning of the 19th century, and they contained silver (and even gold) during the years when all the coins made that year contained those metals. In 1970 the US Mint made its last regular issue silver proof coin with the 40% half dollar issued in that set.
In 1992 the US Mint decided to mint an additional proof set to the normal 'clad' composition proof set, and in this set would be a return to the 90% silver coins for the denominations that had been silver in the past. This made for two different basic proof sets each year, a practice that continues to this day.
