Mexico Proof Silver Libertads
The Proof Mexican Libertad has become one of the most recognized modern coins around the world for its beauty and VERY low mintage. The coins in this extraordinarily beautiful set represent a series dating back (in proof) to 1992 when the first fractional size Silver Libertads were produced at the Mexican Mint in Mexico City.
Ever since their first issue these coins have been relatively scarce as compared to any other major series of modern silver proof coins. By comparison, their recent maximum mintage at 10,000 coins (for the one ounce size) pales in comparison to the hundreds of thousands of proof American Silver Eagles minted annually.
Proof Silver Libertad Design
The obverse of the Libertad depicts the goddess of victory, which appears at the top of Angel of Independence in Mexico City, which was built in 1910 to honor Mexico’s victory against Spain for its independence. This statute was based on Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Two legendary Mexican mountains appear in the background. The reverse of the coin shows the current official seal of Mexico surrounded by previous versions of the seal.
Individual coins of the Proof Silver Libertad set
There are five different .999 fine silver coins in the Proof Silver Libertad set for 2015, ranging in size from 1/20th oz. through 1 oz. All modern precious metal coins are measured in troy ounces, including these.
The 1/20 oz coin is roughly the size of an American half dime at only 16 mm in diameter. It represents the smallest coin in the set, and is one of the smallest new silver coins on the market today weighing it at just over 1.5 grams.
The 1/10 oz coin is approximately the size and weight of an American penny at 20 mm and just over 3.1 grams.
The 1/4 oz coin is just a little larger than a quarter at 27 mm and weighs about 7.77 grams.
The 1/2 oz coin is larger than a half dollar at 33 mm and weighs about 15.6 grams.
The 1 oz coin is roughly the size of a Silver Eagle at 40 mm and weighs just over 31.1 grams.
NGC Graded 2015 Proof Silver Libertads
These coins are a matching set, graded PF70 Ultra Cameo by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This means that the coins in this set have no noted imperfections under inspection by a professional grader using modest magnification. This is the ultimate grade, representing essentially a perfect set of coins!
With a mintage of only 1,000 sets, many of which are not graded or do not grade PF70, the number of five-coin sets in PF70 is likely to never exceed a small fraction of all the issued sets.! Take advantage of this truly rare opportunity today!
