Design of the 2015 Isle of Man Silver Angel
The reverse of the coin features a classical image of Saint Michael slaying a dragon. The Archangel Michael is the patron saint of chivalry and, in most medieval art; a Dragon was used to represent evil. Hence, the image of Archangel Michael’s victory over the Dragon was a symbol of good over evil. This brought angel coins the legendary reputation as lucky charms, able to ward off illness and bring good luck. The inscriptions are “Ag.999,” “1 OUNCE,” and “ANGEL” appear on the reverse.
The obverse of the coin has been approved by Buckingham Palace and carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all U. K. coinage since 1998 and Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins.
The Isle of Man Angel Series
In 1984, a new Angel series was established by the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown dependency located in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. This British island nation commissioned the world renowned Pobjoy Mint in London to strike the modern Angel coin series. The Pobjoy Mint is one of the oldest and most respected private mints in the world. The design they created for the Angel series immediately garnered a Coin of the Year award in its debut year. The Angel series has become one of the most popular numismatic coin series in the entire world. More than mere tokens of good luck, these coins are official legal tender, struck in pure precious metals.
