In 1972, two giant pandas were sent from China to the United States National Zoo in Washington D.C. This zoo still houses these giant pandas, but now there is another one! The newborn bear weighed only 4.8 ounces at birth, and was the pride of her parents Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. The birth of a Giant Panda is truly a once in a lifetime event, as the worldwide population of pandas is said to be less than 1,600!

Design of the 2015 China 1 oz Silver Panda Bao Bao Medal
A design of the baby panda, Bao Bao, is displayed the reverse of this medal. This engraving shows Bao Bao playing in the grass near some bamboo stalks, her favorite food. "BABY GIANT PANDA BAO BAO AT NATIONAL ZOO," is inscribed around the top of the design, and below it is another inscription that reads "1 oz Ag .999."
On the obverse of this medal is a design unique from standard Chinese silver pandas. Instead of the usual image of the Chinese Temple of Heaven making up the obverse, an image of the Great Wall is shown, encapsulated in a small circle. Beside this circle is another that contains an image of the iconic Smithsonian Castle in the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The words "Smithsonian Institution" and "2015" are inscribed on the obverse, as well as some Chinese writing.
