2015 1 oz. Silver Eagle With NGC GEM BU (MLB San Diego Padres Label)
This 2015 Silver Eagle is in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, and the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has slabbed it with a specialized San Diego Padres logo. The intertwined “SD” appears on grass under the standard logo information and again to the right against a deep blue background. On the grassy portion of the logo, the MLB logo also appears. The coin itself measures 40.6 mm in diameter and is .999 pure silver. The patriotic imagery on the coin itself fits perfectly with the logo of a professional team that plays America’s favorite pastime.
Design of the 2015 Silver Eagle
The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed around the top of this 2015 Silver Eagle. Lady Liberty is depicted walking toward the left side of the coin, where the sun is setting in the distance behind a mountain. Liberty is wearing a Phrygian cap and is draped in the American flag, part of which waves in the breeze behind her. She bears symbols of civilian and military honors, branches of laurel and oak, in her left hand. They are long and extend nearly to the edge in the upper right. Behind Liberty are the words of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2015,” the mintage year, is inscribed at the bottom under her foot.
The reverse features an adaptation of the image on the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle has its wings spread widely such that they reach toward the top of the coin. In the space between them are thirteen five-pointed stars, which serve to represent the original states. Extending from the eagle’s beak is a ribbon that unfurls on either side. It reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). The shield that the eagle guards obscures its body. Extending beneath the shield are the bird’s talons, one of which holds arrows, which serve to represent America’s willingness to fight for the values it holds dear, while the other holds an olive branch, indicating a strong preference for peace. The initials “JM” are inscribed below the talon that holds the arrows, a reference to the designer, John Mercanti. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” takes up half of the rim, while another inscription, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR,” takes up the rest.
