2015 1 oz. Silver Eagle
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) slabbed this 2015 Silver Eagle with a special Oakland Athletics label. The Silver Eagle is the most popular government coin in the world. It measures 40.6 mm in diameter and weighs 31.1 g. It consists of 1 Troy oz. of silver that is .999 pure. The patriotic imagery of the coin fits perfectly with a label associated with America’s favorite pastime.
2015 Silver Eagle MLB Oakland Athletics Label
The MLB Oakland Athletics label that NGC used with this 2015 Silver Eagle has a grassy background with “A’S” painted on at the bottom. The official logo of Major League Baseball appears in the lower right corner. To the right is a separate section that has the Oakland Athletics’ logo on a green background, one of their team colors, and the NGC logo at the bottom.
Design of the 2015 Silver Eagle
The obverse of the 2015 Silver Eagle is borrowed from Adolph Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty design for the half dollar. Lady Liberty is depicted striding toward the left side of the coin. She dons a Phrygian cap and is draped in the American flag. In her left hand, she carries symbols of civilian and military glory in the form of branches of laurel and oak. The sun is setting in the lower left, while the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is inscribed on the right. At the bottom, the mintage year, “2015,” is inscribed horizontally under Lady Liberty’s foot, and the word “LIBERTY” arches over the top.
The reverse features a shield guarded by a heraldic eagle. It is an adaptation of the image on the Great Seal of the United States. Thirteen stars form a triangle over the bird’s head. From its beak, a ribbon unfurls on either side. It reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). The eagle holds two powerful symbols in its talons, arrows in one and an olive branch in the other, indicating a willingness to defend the nation’s values along with a preference for peace. The initials of the designer, “JM” (John Mercanti), are inscribed next to the eagle’s tail. Along the top portion of the rim is the name of the country that issued the coin, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while the metal content and face value, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR,” are provided along the bottom.
