2015 1 oz. Silver Eagle with NGC GEM BU (MLB Cincinnati RDs Label)
This 2015 Silver Eagle comes with a special Cincinnati Reds label from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), making it the perfect gift for any Reds fan. While it can also be a part of the complete set of Silver Eagles with MLB labels, it makes a great gift for any baseball fan because the Reds were the first professional baseball team. The MLB logo also appears on the label. As baseball has long been called “America’s favorite pastime,” the MLB tie-in is appropriate for a coin that bears such strong patriotic imagery.
Design of the 2015 Silver Eagle
This 2015 Silver Eagle features the Walking Liberty design first created by Adolph Weinman back in 1916. Lady Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap, holds branches of laurel and oak in her left hand while extending her right out in front of her. Behind her arm waves part of the American flag, in which she is draped. In front her, the sun sets in the horizon with its rays stretching upward and outward throughout that quadrant of the coin. Starting from within those rays, arching over her, and ending on the right is the word “LIBERTY.” On the right, just under the “Y” is the inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The year of mintage, “2015,” is inscribed on the ground under Lady Liberty’s foot.
John Mercanti created the design on the reverse in 1986, modeling it off of the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle holds symbols of peace, an olive branch, and a symbols of America’s willingness to defend its values, arrows. The eagle guards a shield and also grasps a ribbon that extends on either side. The ribbon reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). Over its head, thirteen stars, a reference to the original thirteen states, are arranged in a triangular formation. Just to the right of the eagle’s tail are the initials of the man who designed the image, “JM.” Arching over the image is the name of the country that issued the coin, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while another inscription on the bottom half of the rim provides collectors with the metal content and face value, saying, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR.”
