Why buy this $25 American 2015 1/2 oz Gold Eagle?
2015 saw the 30th issue of the American Gold Eagle. The series is America's oldest ongoing bullion series and is an annual favorite among collectors around the world thanks both to its US government backing for weight and purity and the fact that it employs one of the most beautiful designs in numismatic history. It is struck in four sizes, and the half ounce issue traditionally has the lowest mintage. This half ounce piece comes from a mintage of 75,000 pieces. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .9167 fine gold.
Featuring the Exquisite Saint-Gaudens Design
The obverse bears what most collectors consider the most beautiful design in the history of American numismatics, the Saint-Gaudens. Taken from the double eagle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it features Liberty standing at the center facing the holder. A strong wind blows her long hair as she stands with one foot set upon a rock. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom, in her right hand and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in her left. Behind her the rays of the morning sun spread out, making her appear larger than life. To the left is a small rendering of the Capitol Dome, and fifty stars, four more than appeared on Saint-Gaudens's original design, represent the current states along the rim. Obverse inscriptions read, "LIBERTY" and "2015."
Miley Busiek's reverse design consists of a family of eagles. The male carries an olive branch back to his nest as his mate tends to their young while watching his return. The two parts of the image are divided by a pair of statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD," and face value, "25 DOLLARS."
Impeccable MS70 FDI with Statue of Liberty Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided this coin's grading information on a label that features one of America's most famous landmarks, the Statue of Liberty. NGC graded the piece Mint State 70, which means that it appears perfect even under 5x magnification. The grading company also certified the piece First Day of Issue, which means that it was submitted to them through an exclusive process.
