2014-W 50th Anniversary Gold Kennedy Half Dollar with "ASK NOT" Label
November 22nd, 1963 was a day that would be remembered for years to come. It was the day that John Fitzgerald Kennedy or JFK was assassinated and since then the 35th president has been remembered in many ways, including through currency. The very day of the tragic event the director of the U.S. Mint, Eva Adams met with the chief engraver, Gilroy Roberts, about a Kennedy coin. In December the half dollar (Jacqueline Kennedy picked the denomination) was approved by congress and the first coins were struck a little less than 2 months later in February of 1964.
2014 marked the 50th Anniversary of the coin and to commemorate the anniversary, the U.S Mint created the Kennedy Half Dollar Proof Gold Coin. It is also the first gold half dollar to be offered by the Mint. Purchase one today to add a bit of American history to your collection!

Design of this 2014 50th Anniversary Gold Kennedy Half Dollar
The obverse design of the 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half Dollar from 2014 is taken from the original 1964 design done by Gilroy Roberts. Roberts based the profile of JFK on the portrait that had been done for Kennedy's presidential medal. The gold proof coin is inscribed with "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The dates "1964-2014" are also there in honor of the 50 years the half dollar has been around.
Sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver, Frank Gasparro, the reverse design was based on the presidential seal. The eagle holds the symbolic 13 arrows and olive branch, with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner in his beak. There is a ring of 50 stars, which is more stars than any other U.S. coin produced for circulation so far. West Point Mint's "W" mintmark is seen just below the olive branch. The other inscriptions are "UNITED STAES IF AMERICA," HALF DOLLAR," and "3/4 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD," which is the amount of .9999 gold in the coin.
