Design of the 2014-W 1 oz. Proof Silver Eagle

The obverse side of the 2014-W 1 oz. Proof Silver Eagle is Adolph A. Weinman’s design. This design was originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin of the United States from 1916 to 1947. This design had been a public favorite and one of the most beloved designs of any United States coinage of modern time, silver or otherwise. It was revived for the Silver Eagle decades later. This design features a full length figure of Liberty in full stride; she is enveloped in folds of the flag with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left hand.

The reverse design was created by the United States Mint sculptor and engraver John Mercanti. This design features the heraldic eagle with shield. The right talon holds an olive branch and being held in the left talon are arrows.

History of the 2014-W 1oz. Proof Silver Eagle

The American Silver Eagles were first introduced in the year of 1986. The first Silver Eagle coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986. Secretary of Treasury James A. Baker presided over the striking ceremony that took place at the San Francisco Assay Office. Since they have been released they have become one of the most popular United States coins. It has rivaled classics such as the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Lincoln Cent for the title of Top U.S Coin. From the years of 1986 to 1992 proof Silver Eagle coins were minted at the San Francisco Mint and bared the “S” mintmark. Then from the years of 1993 to 2000 they were minted at the Philadelphia Mint. Beginning in 2001 the proof American Silver Eagle was minted at the West Point Mint.
