The U.S. Mint introduced the iconic American Silver Eagle in 1986. In the intervening time, the series' popularity is unsurpassed by other issues. Stackers and coin collectors alike have found something magical with this series. Each coin is struck on a 1 oz. .999 pure silver planchet. These are legal tender U.S. silver dollars. This example was struck at the West Point branch of the U.S. Mint.
The classic obverse was executed by fabled designer Adolph A. Weinman, who also designed the classic "Mercury" dime. This image was taken from the other of his famous designs, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The image is the allegorical Liberty, striding confidently in the dawn of a new day. She is wrapped in the Stars and Stripes as she carries with her branches of oak and laurel, symbols of strength and success. John Mercanti, the most prolific designer in the history of American coinage designed the resonant heraldic eagle reverse.
Proof coins are struck specifically for collectors using a specialized process involving polished dies and planchets.
