Why purchase this 2014-W $50 1 oz Gold Buffalo Proof?

In 2006, the US Mint introduced the Gold Buffalo and Gold Buffalo Proof as a means of competing with other world mints on purity. The Gold Eagle was struck and continues to be struck from .9167 fine gold, but the Gold Buffalo is .9999 fine, the same high standard of purity that the Royal Canadian Mint uses for its Gold Maple Leaf. Both the bullion and proof version of the Buffalo are struck only as 1 oz pieces. This proof bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint.

Historic Buffalo Design by James Earle Fraser

Both faces of this coin come from James Earle Fraser's Indian Head Nickel. On the obverse is a right-side composite portrait of an elderly Native American man. He has sharply defined facial features and long hair that is braided. Feathers are tied up at the back of his head. The date, "2014," is inscribed on his shoulder, and "LIBERTY" is inscribed on the rim in the upper right.

On the reverse is an animal that is home to the American plains, an American bison. Fraser successfully captured the immense size of the creature through his full use of the available space. Under his head is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," while another common American motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed above his back. The coin's face value, "$50," is provided just below the animal. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD."

Virtually Flawless PF69 UC

This coin received Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) second highest grade, Proof 69. That means that it appears perfect to the naked eye. It was also certified Ultra Cameo, which means that its heavily frosted devices contrast sharply with its deeply mirrored fields.
