The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States Mint. Production of the Gold Eagle was authorized in the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. These wildly popular coins were introduced to the public in 1986 and have been the cornerstone of numismatic and bullion collections since that time.

The obverse design is borrowed from the $20 “Double Eagle” designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The design was introduced in 1907 and circulated until 1933. The image depicts Liberty with her Torch of Freedom held overhead. She is also carrying an olive branch of Peace.

The reverse design is from the US Mint engraver Miley Busiek. It features a nest of eagles, over which the male eagle is in flight.

This 2013-W 1 oz. Gold Eagle was manufactured at the US Mint’s West Point facility from specially prepared burnished blanks.
