Why order this 2-Coin 2013-W West Point Silver Eagle Set?
The West Point Mint marked its 75th anniversary in 2013 and celebrated with this two coin Silver Eagle Set. One of the coins is the first ever Silver Eagle to bear an Enhanced Uncirculated, or Specimen, Finish, and the other was just the fourth ever Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. Both coins bear the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint, where they were struck on 1 oz planchets of .999 fine silver. 235,689 of these sets were sold.
Historic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
Both the obverses and reverses of these coins share the same designs. The obverse bears Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design, which first appeared on the half dollar in 1916 and remained there until 1947 before being revived for the Silver Eagle Series. Liberty is draped in the American flag and wears a Phrygian cap, a symbol of her freedom, as she carries laurel and oak branches, which represent civilian and military honors, respectively. She extends her right hand above the morning sun, as if presenting the holder with the new day.
John Mercanti adapted the Great Seal of the United States for the reverse. At the center is a union shield, which is guarded by an eagle. The eagle clutches a ribbon that bears the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) in its beak while holding arrows, which represent military readiness, and an olive branch, which represents peace, in its talons. Above its head are thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.
