Highly Acclaimed Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
The obverse features the Walking Liberty design that Adolph Weinman created for the 1916 half dollar. Liberty wears a Phrygian cap as a symbol of her freedom. She is draped in the American flag and carries laurel and oak branches. Laurel branches represent honors bestowed upon civilians, while oak branches represent honors bestowed upon members of the military. Her right hand is extended above the rising sun. "LIBERTY' and the date, "2013," join the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," as inscriptions on this face.
"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle John Mercanti's reverse design. The design is Mercanti's take on the Great Seal of the United States. A union shield is at the center. It is guarded by an eagle that holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. It also holds a ribbon in its beak. The ribbon bears the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). At the top of the design thirteen stars are arranged in a triangular shape. They represent the original thirteen states.
