Why buy this 2013-(S) American Silver Eagle?

The American Silver Eagle has been the world's favorite bullion coin since the series began in 1986. Its beautiful designs and backing for weight and purity by the US government have only continued to make it a top choice among collectors. One potential knock on the series is that the bullion version has had very little variety... at least until this decade. Thanks to a response to a request submitted under the Freedom of Information Act, collectors learned a few years ago that the US Mint began striking supplemental Silver Eagles outside of Philadelphia. Although the coins lack mint marks and the origins of many coins cannot now be determined, available information made it possible to determine where certain coins were minted, including this 2013 piece that was struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Classic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman

The obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, which was issued from 1916-1947. Liberty is draped in an American flag and dons a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she has been freed from slavery. She carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, and extends her right hand in front of her above the rising sun, as though greeting the new day.

An eagle clutches arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, while guarding a union shield on the reverse. Above the bird's head are thirteen stars, one for each of the original states. John Mercanti modeled the design off of the Great Seal of the United States. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim.
