Design of this 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle
The goddess Liberty dominates the obverse of this 2012-W Proof Silver Eagle. Striding confidently toward the left side of the coin, she holds out her right hand as though in a welcoming gesture. She carries olive branches in her left hand, indicting a desire for peace. Over her head, the goddess's name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed along the rim of the coin. To Liberty's lower left is the sun, with its rays extending upwards. Behind the goddess on the right side of the coin are the words, "IN GOD WE TRUST," America's national motto. The year of mintage, "2012," is inscribed at the bottom under Liberty's right foot. This design is a modification of the original Walking Liberty, which was completed by Adolph Weinman in 1916.
The rim of the reverse is covered with two inscriptions. Across the top, the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," is inscribed, while the silver content and face value, of particular interest to bullion buyers, are inscribed around the bottom half of the rim. That inscription reads, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR." The design itself features an eagle with its wings spread above its head. In the negative space between the eagle's wings are thirteen stars, which represent the original thirteen states. The eagle guards a shield, which is used as a symbol of the country. In one talon, the bird bears arrows, which are an indication that America will fight for its values. In the other is an olive branch, which stands for a preference for peace. Below the olive branch is a "W," a mint mark that means that the coin was struck at the West Point mint. Under the talon that bears the arrows are the initials of the designer, "JM," which stand for John Mercanti.
