Why buy this Burnished 2012-W Silver Eagle?
The Burnished Silver Eagle Series first gave collectors a new look at the iconic Silver Eagle's designs in 2006. It was not issued in 2009 or 2010, so this 2012 piece comes from its fifth issue overall. The coin was struck on a burnished blank of .999 fine silver. Unlike the bullion version of the coin, this one bears a "W" mint mark, which indicates that it was struck at the West Point Mint. This coin is part of a mintage of 226,120 pieces.
Featuring Adolph Weinman's Classic Walking Liberty Design
The coin's obverse bears Adolph Weinman's historic Walking Liberty design, which was struck on American half dollars from 1916-1947. The image features Liberty striding to the left with branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. The laurel branches traditionally symbolize civilian honors, while the oak branches represent military ones. Liberty is draped in the American flag and has a Phrygian cap, which designates its wearer as a freed slave, on her head. She extends her right hand in front of her above the morning sun, which emerges from beyond the horizon below. Inscriptions on the obverse include "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2012."
On the reverse is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. Thirteen stars represent the original states at the top of the design. Below, an eagle protects a union shield. The bird has its wings spread and holds a ribbon with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. It also holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace, in its talons. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
