Why buy this 1/2 oz Gold 2012-W $25 American Eagle Proof?

Start or grow your collection of coins that bear one of numismatic history's most beautiful designs with this half ounce 2012-W Proof Gold Eagle. The coin is part of a rich tradition that began in 1986. The series revived an iconic design from early in the 20th century, and the US Mint executed it with exceptional precision and a stunning proof finish. Part of a mintage of just 12,809 pieces, this coin was struck from .9167 fine gold at the West Point Mint. That mint's "W" mint mark appears in the lower right of the obverse.

Featuring the Famous Saint-Gaudens Design

The obverse design takes its name from the man who created it, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It originally appeared on the double eagle. Liberty stands facing the holder with one foot set upon a rock and a strong breeze blowing her long hair and garment. She holds her torch, a symbol of freedom for people throughout the world, in front of her and an olive branch, a universal symbol for peace, off to her side. She appears larger than life thanks to the rays of the morning sun, which spread out behind her, and the miniature rendering of the Capitol Dome, which is on the left. The current states are represented by 50 states along the rim. This is an adaptation from the original design, on which there were just forty-six. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, and the date, "2012," is set off to the right.

Miley Busiek's eagle family design, which features on the reverse, is divided into two parts. The top portion is a male eagle, which prepares to land in its nest with an olive branch in his talons. Below, his mate watches his return while tending to their nestlings. The two parts of the design are separated by a pair of statutory inscriptions, "E PLURRIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed on the top part of the rim, while the bottom half bears inscriptions of the coin's weight, "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD," and face value, "25 DOLLARS."

Perfect PF70 UC with Black Core Holder

This coin earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) highest grade, Proof 70, which means that it lacks even a single imperfection that is visible under 5x magnification. It was also certified Ultra Cameo thanks to the sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields on both of its faces. This piece comes set in a sleek black core holder.
