Obverse: The left facing likeness of former South African President Paul Kruger is centered on the obverse. This image, designed by award-winning sculptor Otto Schultz, was originally created for the South African Gold Pond coin in 1892.

Reverse: A springbok antelope is featured on the reverse, gracefully leaping over the foliage of the South African savanna. This iconic interpretation of the national animal was initially minted upon the 1948 South African five shilling coin. The design is credited to Coert Steynberg, an acclaimed South African sculptor.
