Why Buy This Proof 70 Ultra Cameo 2012 Southern Sky - Crux 1 oz. Domed Silver Proof from Australia?

This coin featuring the Crux constellation is part of the Australian Southern Sky series. It's made from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver and a portion of the reverse has been colorized. This coin is actually dome-shaped rather than flat. It was struck by the Perth Mint and the mintage limit for this design was set at 10,000 pieces.

Stunning Celestial Design

Since this is an Australian coin, the obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait shown here was created by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The Crux design is located on the reverse. The stars making up the constellation are silver and the background has been colorized to make them stand out even more.

Proof 70 Perfection from NGC

When this coin was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for grading, the result was excellent. It received the highest grade that can be given to a proof coin, Proof 70. It also received the Ultra Cameo designation because it has such impressive visual contrast. This colorized dome-shaped coin has been permanently encapsulated to protect it.

the price is sky high too
For a domed 1 oz .999 silver coin it is unique, but with a mintage of 10,000, hardly rare. To spend almost 900.00 on an ounce of silver that is a modern minted coin, it should at least be a .9999 pure silver coin, I don't think this coin would ever catch up to its purchase price---in value--. Or in collection value. It is just too expensive for the mintage, and theme. If the mintage was 2,500, maybe. But as a stand alone coin no way. Make it part of a series with subsequent coin mintage's markedly fewer, then as the beginning part of that really rare and expensive set, it might show some value over cost in 10 years. $900.00 FOR ONE MODERN OUNCE OF SILVER NEEDS TO BE VERY VERY RARE, or part of a set that can justify spending so much on one single ounce, EVEN graded ounces. So unless you plan on making this a Family heirloom and passing it down, My opinion is. It is way too pricey, and resale value would be impossible to predict, but it won't be no 900.00. .

Hi David, the reason for this price is the low grading population of 70's for this release. Very few coins received the highest grade of 70, so they have a higher demand on the market.
