2012 1 oz. Silver Eagle in NGC MS69

This 2012 Silver Eagle received a grade of MS69 from the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC), which means that it has no more than two small, non-detracting flaws. In laymen’s terms, it is a nearly perfect coin. The Silver Eagle is America’s government bullion coin and is widely collected worldwide because it is the only government coin whose silver content is backed by the United States government. It has an actual silver weight of 31.1 g and is .999 pure.

Design of the 2012 Silver Eagle

The obverse of this 2012 Silver Eagle bears the design that Adolph Weinman created for the half dollar back in 1916, Walking Liberty. As she strides toward the left side of the coin, Lady Liberty carries branches of laurel and oak in her left hand. The branches serve to symbolize civilian and military glory. Her right hand extends in front of her, with her open-palmed hand nearly touching the edge in the upper left. She is glad in the American flag, part of which waves to the left of her. Below that portion of the flag is the sun, which is setting behind a mountain on the horizon. Starting from within the sun’s rays, the word “LIBERTY” arches over the entire scene. The year of mintage, “2012,” is inscribed on the ground under one of Lady Liberty’s feet, while the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” are inscribed above the other.

On the reverse, an eagle spreads itself around a shield, which it defends. Thirteen stars are arranged over the bird’s head, a reference to the thirteen states at the start of the country. In the eagle’s beak, it bears a ribbon that opens up to either side. The ribbon reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). In its talons are symbols of peace, an olive branch, and a willingness to defend American values, arrows. To the right of the bird’s tail are the initials “JM,” a reference to the man who adapted the image from the Great Seal of the United States, John Mercanti. The rim has two sets of inscriptions. The one at the top indicates the country that issued the coin, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” while the one at the bottom offers the metal content and face value, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR.”
