Why add this impressively graded 2011-W First Spouse 1/2 oz. gold coin honoring Lucretia Garfield to your collection?
The U.S. Mint launched its gold coin series celebrating the nation's First Spouses in 2007. The 21st release of the series was dedicated to Lucretia Garfield. Lucretia was First Lady for only six months, as her husband, 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield, was injured by an assassin's bullet four months into his presidency, and died two months later.
Detailed Portrait of First Lady Lucretia Garfield
Obverse: The obverse features an incredibly lifelike forward facing portrait of First Lady Lucretia Garfield, with her tresses swept up in an artistic array of elegant curls. Inscribed "LUCRETIA GARFIELD," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY 2011," the West Point Mint mark "W" and "20th 1881."
Reverse: Mrs. Garfield is depicted seated beside an easel on the reverse, with a pallet held in her left hand, as she brushes paint onto a canvas with her right. The charming image, which represents the First Lady's interest in the arts, is encircled by a frame containing the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "$10," "1/2 OZ." and ".9999 FINE GOLD."
