Why add the 2011-P 5 Oz Silver America the Beautiful NP9 Vicksburg NGC SP70 Specimen 70 to your collection?
The extraordinary America the Beautiful series celebrates America’s National Parks and historic places. This series is comprised of the largest size silver coins produced by the US Mint and each contains five oz. of .999 fine silver.
The 2011 5 oz. Vicksburg Silver Coin commemorates the siege that occurred on the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, MS, now the site of the National Military Park. The siege took place from May 18 – July 4, 1863 and was a crucial Civil War turning point.
The reverse of the coin depicts the ironclad gunboat, the U.S.S. Cairo, now on display at the National Military Park. On December 12, 1862, while clearing mines from the river the Cairo struck a mine and sank in 12 minutes with no casualties.
The series obverse features the William Cousins low-relief George Washington portrait which was based on the original 1932 Washington Quarter designed by John Flanagan.
Specimen coins are produced to a high standard of finish like proof coins or double-struck BU coins. These are uncirculated coins that have been handled individually to avoid the surface blemishes which occur due to bulk handling.
