The Philadelphia Branch of the United States Mint began striking the .999 pure silver 5 oz. versions of the ATB quarter dollars in 2010. This series is the first in U.S. Mint history that is struck on silver rounds larger than 1 oz. The silver planchets for the 5 oz. ATB series are sourced from Idaho's Sunshine Minting.

The reverse shows the Union Navy's famous ironclad warship the U.S.S. Cairo deployed on the Yazoo River during the Civil War. The image was designed by Thomas Cleveland. The obverse features the classic quarter dollar profile portrait of President George Washington. The image was designed by John Flanagan in 1932.
