Why buy this 2010-W $50 1 oz Gold Buffalo Proof?

Since 1986, the American Gold Eagle has been the predominant gold bullion coin in the world. In spite of its relative popularity, there was always a set of collectors who pursued the purist coins. They turned to other options, like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf... until 2006. That is when the US Mint launched its first ever .9999 fine gold bullion coin, the American Gold Buffalo. This is the proof counterpart to the series, a treasured piece for the few collectors who are able to get them. This coin was struck from one ounce of .9999 fine gold at the West Point Mint, as noted by the "W" mint mark on the obverse. It was part of a mintage of just 49,263 pieces.

Classic Buffalo Design by James Earle Fraser

The designs on both faces of this coin were taken from James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel. The obverse bears a right-side portrait of an aging Native American man. He appears somber and has distinct facial features that combine with his long, straight hair and the feathers tied up at the back of his head to make him immediately identifiable as an American Indian. "LIBERTY" is inscribed in front of his face, while the date, "2010," is provided on his shoulder.

On the reverse is an American bison. Fraser captured the massive size of the creature by making full use of the space available. Several inscriptions above and below the animal provide essential information about the coin, such as its face value, "$50," its weight, "1 OZ," and its purity, ".9999 FINE GOLD."

Perfect PF70 UC with Mercanti Signed Flag Label

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Proof 70 (PF70) and certified it Ultra Cameo (UC). The grade indicates that the coin is flawless as seen under 5x magnification, while the UC designation signifies that there are particularly sharp contrasts between frosted devices and mirrored fields. This information comes on a label that was signed by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti and bears the American flag.
