2010 $50 1 oz. Gold Buffalo

The American Gold Buffalo coins are the first to be struck in .9999 (24 karat) fine gold by the U.S. Mint. The coins are comprised of 1 oz. .9999 fine gold, and are guaranteed by the U.S. Government for the weight and purity. These coins are not sold directly from the Mint, and are only available through licensed dealers, such as ModernCoinMart.

Design of the 2010 $50 1 oz. Gold Buffalo

The design used for this coin replicates James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design from 1913. The obverse features an Indian head, adorned with feathers. Fraser’s design is a compilation of unique physical traits from different tribes around the United States; this design celebrates diversity among Native Americans. “LIBERTY” and “2010” are inscribed on the obverse.

The reverse features an American Buffalo, standing on slightly raised ground. The details of this coin are breath-taking, as the curly hair, rib marks, and hooves are clearly visible in contrast to the textured background. The reverse bears the inscriptions, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”
