Why Choose This Proof 70 Deep Cameo 2009-W $50 Proof Gold Buffalo with a Black Diamond Label?

The US Mint introduced its first 24 karat gold coin in 2006, the American Gold Buffalo. The coin shown here was struck in 2009 at the West Point branch of the US Mint. It has a proof finish and weighs 1 Troy oz. It had a moderate mintage. There were 49,306 of these released by the Mint.

The Classic Work of James Earle Fraser

Both the obverse and reverse designs were created by James Earle Fraser. They were first used for the Buffalo nickel in 1913. The obverse shows a detailed portrait of a Native American. The date can be found near the base of his neck.

The reverse depicts a large buffalo standing on a small mound. The face value is just below the buffalo's front hooves and the weight and purity inscriptions can be found below that.

Perfect Proof 70 Deep Cameo with a Black Diamond Label

When this coin was submitted to the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), it received the grade of Proof 70 and the Deep Cameo designation. That means this gold proof is completely flawless and it has excellent visual contrast. The label displaying its grade features Black Diamond, a famous buffalo who was rumored to have been the model for the design on the coin's reverse.
