Why purchase this perfectly graded 2009-P Louis Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar?

This silver dollar honors the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system of reading and writing for the visually impaired. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint from 0.7736 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver with a reported mintage of 82,639 coins, this 2009-P Louis Braille Silver Dollar represents the first time the U.S. Mint issued a coin featuring readable Braille characters.

Magnificently Detailed Imagery

Louis Braille is depicted on the obverse in a forward facing portrait designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The image is accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", "LOUIS BRAILLE", and the bicentennial dates of "1809" and "2009".

The reverse illustrates the scene of a child sitting at a table reading a book in Braille, beside a bookcase adorned with the word "INDEPENDENCE". Above, the word "Braille", abbreviated as "BRL" appears in Braille characters. The inspiring image was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Joseph Menna, and includes the additional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and "ONE DOLLAR".
