2009 $20 Ultra High Relief 1 oz. Gold Double Eagle Mint State 70 NGC
If there is one modern coin each and every coin collector must add to their collections, then it is the extremely popular 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle listed here.
This commemorative gold coin is the ultimate expression of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design concept that was brought to life by the US Mint more than a 100 years ago. However, the US Mint ran into challenges during the minting of the 1907 Ultra High Relief double eagle gold. The 1907 coin could not be minted in volume due to technical constraints. This led to the mintage of just over 12,000 of these ultra high relief gold coins. This was before the Mint had to switch to a low relief version. This version was easier to mint and stacked better, but deviated from Saint-Gaudens’ original intent to have his designs in high relief. It therefore came as a pleasant surprise when the Mint announced a modern collector’s version of the 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin in 2009. The new coin, like its 1907 predecessor, was dated in Roman numerals, although in terms of the year 2009 (MMIX). In addition, 4 additional stars were added to represent the modern day 50 states.
The Mint also decided to go with a diameter of 27 mm and a thickness of 4 mm in terms of the 2009 gold bullion coin. This was to accommodate the ultra high relief as well as higher and finer gold content (1 oz. .9999 fine). The diameter of the Saint-Gaudens 1907 Double Eagle is 34 mm.
Furthermore, in order to stay true to the original design, the Mint made use of digital mapping to map the original plasters of Saint-Gaudens. This was then used in the die-making process. The end result was the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coin listed here – one of the most popular and beautiful American coins available today.
