Design of the 2008-W Proof Silver Eagle
Lady Liberty figures prominently on the obverse of this 2008-W Proof Silver Eagle PCGS. She strides toward the left of the coin, where the sun is setting on the horizon. In her left hand, she holds long branches of laurel and oak, which extend around her shoulder. The branches represent civilian and military honors. Her right hand extends in front of her, palm open. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is inscribed over her left foot, which is vertical in the lower right, as though about to leave the ground. The year of mintage, “2008,” is inscribed on the ground, while the word “LIBERTY” dominates the top half of the rim, with some letters partially obscured by the image.
On the reverse is a design that John Mercanti created based on the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle spreads its wings upward. Its body is blocked by a shield, which it guards. Its talons bear symbols of peace, an olive branch, and America’s willingness to defend its values when forced to do so, arrows. It bears a ribbon that bears the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. Thirteen stars are arranged over the eagle’s head, a reference to the original thirteen states. The name of the country in which the coin is legal tender, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” arches over the top, while another inscription on the bottom shows the metal content and face value.
