Why buy this $5 American 2008-W 1/10 oz Burnished Gold Buffalo?

After decades of success with the American Gold Eagle, the U.S Mint realized that some collectors preferred gold coins from other countries due to the relatively low purity of Gold Eagles. That gave birth to the Gold Buffalo series, which began in 2006. Although the series remains popular today, Gold Buffaloes, both proof and bullion, were struck in fractional sizes in just one year: 2008. That makes this coin all the more special. Struck from .9999 fine gold, this coin was one of just 18,884 1/10 oz Proof Gold Buffaloes ever struck. It bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint.

Classic Buffalo Design by James Earle Fraser

Both faces of this coin take their designs from James Earle Fraser's Buffalo Nickel. On the obverse is a composite portrait of an elderly Native American man. Shown in right-side profile, the figure has well defined facial figures, long hair that is braided down over his shoulders, and feathers tied up at the back of his head. He is joined by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "2008," and "F," for Fraser.

On the reverse is an American bison. The massive figure is native to the American plains. Fraser captures his stature through the full use of the available space. Among the many rim inscriptions on this face are the coin's face value, "$5," and its weight and purity, "1/10 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD."

Virtually Flawless MS69

This coin earned a Mint State 69 grade, the company's second highest, from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To earn that grade, a coin must appear perfect to the naked eye.
