Traditional Maple Leaf Imagery With Olympic Symbolism
Obverse: The obverse is adorned with the image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by award-winning Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt in 2003. The right facing effigy of the monarch is surrounded by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II," "5 DOLLARS" and "2008."
Reverse: A sugar maple leaf appears on the reverse, accompanied by the inscriptions "CANADA," "FINE SILVER 1 OZ. ARGENT PUR" and "9999." The classically styled maple leaf graphic was created by the late Walter Ott (1920-2020), the Chief Engraver and Director of Art of the RCM from 1977 until 1985. The leaf is partially overlapped by an almond-shaped inset which is ornamented with the Inuksuk emblem of the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Olympic Rings logo and the inscription "VANCOUVER 2010."
